Our organization, CASPR, is devoted to advancing novel treatments that can solve addiction at a population scale. We believe GLP-1s are the biggest breakthrough in addiction medicine in 50 years. These medications, like Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Zepbound were first developed to treat diabetes. In this review I aim to re-examine the contested concept of food addiction as a disease in the context of emerging GLP-1based obesity pharmacotherapies, integrating perspectives from neurobiology, societal impacts, and early evidence for their potential application in other substance-use disorders. Emerging evidence suggests GLP-1s may hold promise as an added therapeutic option, but further clinical trials in humans are necessary to determine the safety, efficacy, and role in addiction treatment.
